The overheard secret is the turn, and it is delivered the cruellest way possible: not confessed, not confronted, just heard. She loses the relationship, the job and her certainty about her own judgement in the same stretch of pages, and the novel sits in that for a while.
What follows is the closest thing in the catalogue to a genuine low point. Pregnant, heartbroken and jobless is not a temporary inconvenience, and at 209 pages the book is tight enough that the recovery has to be efficient rather than leisurely.
